When you think of the word “Ransom” you think of the old spaghetti westerns or an infamous bank robbery. In 2020 however, hackers have developed a new way to break into your online vault and hold your personal data and information hostage until a “Ransom” is paid.
Ransomware is a type of malware commonly used as a phishing software, encrypting itself into various files on a device. This renders any files and the systems that rely on them unusable (CISA, 2020). Malicious actors, or the individuals behind the malicious attack, then demand ransom in exchange for decryption. In recent years, ransomware incidents have become increasingly prevalent among the Nation’s state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government entities and critical infrastructure organizations (CISA, 2020)
Ransomware isn’t the first disaster that comes to mind when thinking about protecting your business, but it can be the deadliest. Not only can your sensitive data be affected but potentially your clients as well.
Ways to protect yourself would be:
- Using unique passwords
- Having separate passwords for different accounts
- A Backup service with full systems and file backups not connected to your network.
An example of this is an attack in Lake City Florida, the local administrative government was infiltrated and locked down by ransomware. All services except for public safety were compromised and locked down until the city paid $500,000 in bitcoins to the Malicious actors (Antonio, 2020).
Luckily the public sector was encrypted and separated. The real question is why the rest of their services were not equally secure. They could have used viLogics various service programs such as data backup, endpoint security and firewalls to prevent this from happening. Specific service would be BaaS with an Ice Vault copy of the data (Ice vault = a data copy stored offnet or off the network)
As technology evolves there is unfortunately new ways hackers try to access your personal and business data. That’s why companies like viLogics prioritize keep your data safe.
